GTA 6 storage prep: PS5 vs Xbox

Launch November 19, 2026 · Preloads open November 12, 2026

GTA 6 is expected to be a very large download. Rockstar has not announced the file size, so treat the numbers here as planning estimates, not facts: ViceHub's estimate is 150–200 GB Estimate for the base game. Plan for a download of around 200 GB, and keep about 250 GB free to be safe.

That sounds like a lot of deleting — but it is a one-evening job if you do it now, instead of during preload week when everyone else is doing the same thing. This guide walks through what each console needs, how to free up space, and how expansion storage works on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

How much space do you need?

There are two different numbers, and mixing them up is where people get caught out:

Download size
What comes down from the store. On current estimates, plan for roughly 200 GB — the top of the 150–200 GB estimate range — rather than hoping for the low end.
Install headroom
The extra working room your console needs while it unpacks and installs that download. Consoles copy, verify and assemble files during an install, so a drive filled to the last gigabyte can refuse to start — or stall partway through.
The safe target: ~250 GB free
The estimated download, plus headroom for the install process, plus breathing room for the day-one update GTA 6 is likely to get at launch. Hit 250 GB free and none of those should stop you pressing play on November 19.

A standard PS5 has roughly 667 GB of usable storage and an Xbox Series X roughly 802 GB, so GTA 6 fits on either — the question is what else is already on there. The Xbox Series S, with roughly 364 GB usable, is the tightest squeeze: a 200–250 GB install leaves room for almost nothing else, so Series S owners should make their storage decisions earliest.

PS5 — get ready

1. Check your free space

Go to Settings → Storage. You'll see free space for the console storage and any M.2 SSD you've installed. One important detail: the ~250 GB needs to be free on the single drive you install GTA 6 on — one install can't be split across two drives, so 125 GB free on each doesn't add up.

2. Free up space

  • Delete games you've finished. Your save data is kept separately, and you can re-download anything later.
  • Move games to a USB drive. PS5 games can be stored on an extended USB drive to free up the internal SSD — but they can't be played from there. Move a PS5 game back to internal storage or your M.2 SSD before you can play it. PS4 games are the exception: they can be stored and played from USB.
  • Clear the clutter. Captured video clips and old game installs you no longer touch add up faster than you'd expect.

3. Or expand: M.2 SSD

The PS5's expansion slot takes an M.2 NVMe PCIe Gen4 SSD with a heatsink (the heatsink matters — the drive needs it to stay cool under load). Games installed on the M.2 drive play exactly like internal storage, with no moving files back and forth. If you're buying one, buy it before November: expansion drives reliably get scarce and pricier around a launch this size.

4. Set up the preload

Turn on automatic downloads and keep the console in rest mode with an internet connection, so the preload can land as soon as it opens on November 12. Check in Settings that automatic updates and downloads are enabled, and that rest mode is set to stay connected to the internet.

Xbox Series X|S — get ready

1. Check your free space

Go to Settings → System → Storage. You'll see your internal storage and anything attached. Aim for about 250 GB free on the one drive you'll install GTA 6 on — internal storage or an expansion card — before November 12.

2. Free up space

  • Uninstall games you're done with. Saves live in the cloud with your account, and anything you own can be re-downloaded later.
  • Move games to a USB drive. A USB drive is cheap overflow storage — but with one hard rule (below), so use it for the games you won't play during launch week.

3. Or expand: Storage Expansion Card

Xbox uses the official Storage Expansion Card (made by Seagate and WD Black), which slots into the back of the console. It's the only expansion that behaves exactly like internal storage: Series X|S games play directly from the card, no moving files around.

USB drives are different: they can store Series X|S games, but those games must be moved back to internal storage or the expansion card to play. USB is fine for playing older Xbox One and backwards-compatible titles directly.

4. Set up the preload

Enable downloads and keep the console connected so the preload can land when it opens on November 12. In Settings, make sure automatic updates are on and your power mode lets the console download while it's off or sleeping.

The one rule that mattersUSB drives are storage only for PS5 games — a PS5 game has to sit on internal storage or the M.2 SSD to actually play.Series X|S games only run from internal storage or the expansion card — USB can hold them, but you'll move them back before playing.

Both consoles need the same thing from you: about 250 GB free before November 12. The difference is only in how you get there.

Do this before November 12

  • Check your free space today — Settings → Storage on PS5, Settings → System → Storage on Xbox. Know your number before you plan anything.
  • Hit the ~250 GB free target. Delete finished games first, move the rest to a USB drive, and clear out old capture clips.
  • Decide on expansion early. If deleting isn't enough, order an M.2 SSD (PS5) or a Storage Expansion Card (Xbox) now — not during launch week, when stock and prices move.
  • Turn on automatic downloads and make sure rest mode (PS5) or your power settings (Xbox) let the console download while it sleeps.
  • Preload on November 12. Start the download the day preloads open, not the night before launch — servers are busiest closest to release.
  • Leave headroom after the preload. Don't refill the space you cleared. A day-one update needs room too, and you want November 19 to be press play, not another evening of deleting games.
